Optical fibres are highly prone to vapour permeability problems, especially for underground, underwater or sensor-based applications. Not only is the strength of polymer coated fibres dependant on permeability, but also the spectral shift response of optical whispering-gallery modes is due to the adsorption and desorption of water molecules. Versaperm’s specialist measurement equipment can make a huge difference.
Versapem’s latest systems measure the vapour permeability of fibre products and their casings both quickly and with an accuracy well into the Parts Per Million (PPM) range – in some applications it can reach PPB accuracies. This becomes critically important as even the manufacturing processes can easily affect a material’s vapour permeability by a factor of four times. Published permeability values do not take this into account.
The system can optionally determine vapour permeability not just for water vapour but for virtually every gas – including in exotic environments as well as in acidic or hydrocarbon-based conditions. It can also control a wide range of physical conditions from temperature (-80 C to over +1000 C ), pressure, and partial pressure / humidity.
The equipment can measure both the vapour permeability of a product’s outer case and the optic fibre itself.
